Meet the Cast

Susannah Mars (The Storyteller) is a lifelong performing artist, having appeared in over 100 productions and concerts including those at Portland Opera, Portland Playhouse, Portland Center Stage, Artists Repertory Theatre, and Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theater. She is the proud recipient of six Portland Drama Critics awards and two Regional Arts and Culture Council Grants. She played psychiatrist Dr. Richet on NBC’s Grimm and was an arts envoy to Cairo with the U.S. State Department. Adam B. Shapiro (The Rabbi) has been seen Off-Broadway in Death of a Salesman, The Mikado, Bastard Jones, Wikimusical, and since 2008, he has been a fixture of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, in The Golden Bride, The Megille of Itsik Manger, Gimpel the Fool, and most especially, the Drama-Desk and Outer Critics Award winning Fiddler On The Roof in Yiddish, in which he played The Rabbi and understudied Tevye and Lazer Wolf.
Other theatre credits include The Producers (Max), The Prom (Barry), Ragtime (Tateh), Titanic (Strauss), Young Frankenstein (Hermit), and She Loves Me (Head Waiter). Film/TV credits include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, 30 Rock, Master of None, FBI Most Wanted, and HBO’s Emmy-winning film The Normal Heart, among others. Eric Little (The Golem) is an actor and musician from Portland, Oregon currently living in Berlin, Germany. He is excited to make his debut with Northwest Children’s Theater. Some of his favorite Portland area credits include Into the Woods (the Baker) and The Drowsy Chaperone (Conductor) at Broadway Rose, Fun Home (Conductor) and Sweeney Todd (Tobias) at Portland Center Stage, A Christmas Carol (Music Director, Fred, Young Scrooge) at Portland Playhouse, A Year with Frog and Toad (The Snail) at Oregon Children’s Theater, Les Miserables (Music Director) at Spokane Civic Theater, and Next to Normal (Music Director) at Artists Repertory Theater.

Olive Baity (Ruth) is honored to portray Ruth in The Golem’s Gift, her NWCT debut and tenth production at just fourteen years old. She comes from a long line of performers and musicians and feels most at home on the stage. Recent roles include Cinderella in Into the Woods Jr. and Brooke Wyndham in Legally Blonde Jr. at Lakewood Theater, and Miss Honey in Matilda Jr. and the title role in Oliver! Jr. at Lake Oswego Middle School. Olive is also a professional voice actor, best known as Unicorn, one of the leads in Apple TV’s Emmy-nominated preschool series Slumberkins. Besides her passion for singing, she loves writing fiction, drawing, and playing acoustic guitar.

Yuyoun Choi (Velvel) is excited to do another Mainstage show with NWCT! He was most recently seen on the NWCT mainstage in Rudolph (Bumble). In Catalyst, he was last seen in Into the Woods (Baker), and A Chorus Line (Paul). He does theater at his high school, and was most recently seen in Brigadoon (Tommy Albright). In other communities, he was last seen in Les Miserables (Marius), and Jesus Christ Superstar (Pilate).

Brandy Schnaars (Baker/Ensemble) is thrilled to join the world premiere of The Golem’s Gift. Previous NWCT credits include A Year with Frog and Toad (Toad) and Mrs. Claus (Rudolph). Recently, Brandy fulfilled a dream role playing the Witch in Into the Woods with Mt. Hood Repertory Theatre. Other regional credits include Lakewood Theatre Company, Oregon Children’s Theatre, and Funhouse Lounge. She will appear next in Stumptown Stages’ Annie this November. Love and thanks to her family and friends for always cheering her on!

Christiane Herrmann (Mrs. Moskovitz/Ensemble) is overjoyed to return to NWCT for The Golem’s Gift after appearing twice in Pete the Cat as Mom.
Originally from Wisconsin, Christiane received a BFA in Musical Theatre at UW-Milwaukee and an Early Childhood Education certificate at Gateway Community College. Favorite roles include Maggie (A Chorus Line), and Lady Larkin (Once Upon a Mattress), and Princess Puffer (Mystery of Edwin Drood).
Christiane would like to thank her family, friends, and NWCT team for their support. Lastly, a huge shout out to her Fiancé, Liam, for his constant encouragement and making Oregon feel like home.

Graham Buyagawan (Ensemble) is delighted to be returning to NWCT! Graham is a singer, actor, musician, music director and educator in Oregon. Graham was previously in The Wizard of Oz at NWCT (Uncle Henry/Guard) last winter, and was most recently seen as Rapunzel’s Prince in George Fox University’s Summer Stock Theatre’s Production of Into the Woods. He also is a Co-Founder and the Executive Director of Tapestry Theater Collective. Graham holds BAs in Vocal Performance and Music Education from George Fox University. Enjoy the show!

Elijah Sims (Ensemble) has been performing on stage since he was 7 years old (Ragtime, Broadway Tour). You may have seen him in Alice in Wonderland: A Jazz Musical (NWCT), Black When I’m Singing Blue When I Ain’t (Third Rail Repertory Theater) or The Sounds Of Afrolitical Movement (Portland Playhouse) or as Agwe in Once On This Island (World Stage Theatre) or most recently as The Baker in Into The Woods (World Stage Theatre).
Elijah has been performing for over 2 decades now, and most recently was a part of the 20th anniversary ensemble of Who I Am; Celebrating Me (World Stage Theatre). The stage makes him feel as though the world is his oyster, and he loves to explore his creativity with others in the community.

Teague Shattuck (Ensemble) is a theatre artist from San Jose, CA, soon heading to University College Dublin, Ireland to study playwriting. You may recognize them as Dad (or Grumpy Toad) from Pete the Cat at NWCT! Teague founded the PDX Trans Voices Cabaret, is currently developing their original musical JUST KEEP WATCHING, and is an alumni of Reed College and Third Rail Rep’s Mentorship Program. Teague has been performing since childhood, some of their favorite roles include Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast, Red in Late, A Cowboy Song, and Mama Mae Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie.

Luke Stewart (Ensemble) is originally from Marion, Ohi and has traveled the world performing in regional theatres, on cruise ships, in theme parks and on-camera. Locally, he works with high schools as a theatre director and coach. Outside of work, Luke has recently been enjoying the start of football season (Go Bucks! Fins Up!), playing golf poorly, and hunting for movies that will keep him up at night.

Nadine Luker (Ensemble) is so excited to be a part of the premiere of The Golem’s Gift.
As a member of the Catalyst youth program, she has been a part of Singin’ In The Rain as Cosmo, and A Chorus Line as Mark, and Mean Girls as the stage manager.
Outside of NWCT she was most recently in Chicago as Kitty/Dance Captain, and Hadestown in the ensemble at Lincoln High School.

Tilly Mansfield (Ensemble) is excited to return to NWCT’s Mainstage! She joined Catalyst in the fall of 2023 and has LOVED being a part of this welcoming and supportive community. “I feel so at home here!”

Meet the Creative Team

Benny Zelkowicz (Playwright/Lyricist) is an animator (The LEGO Movie, Robot Chicken), voice actor (Lunar Jim on BBC/CBC), and novelist (co-author of The Books of Ore trilogy published by Disney-Hyperion). His award-winning sand-animated film “The ErlKing” showed at festivals around the world, including the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center and Sundance. In addition to writing and illustrating the picture book “The Golem’s Gift” (on which this musical is based), he has also published two neuroscience papers in a major international journal and once parallel parked a 22-foot lime-green fire truck. His newest film, “The Sacred Society”, a sand-animated documentary about Jewish burial rituals, won top prizes at the Atlanta, San Francisco, and Toronto Jewish film festivals and qualified for the 2026 Academy Awards. He currently lives in Columbus, OH, where he teaches animation at Ohio State, serves as the director of the Columbus Jewish Film Festival, and can be spotted acting in local productions, including as Lemml in Indecent and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof.

Ezra Weiss (Composer/Music Director/Orchestrations) has served as musical director for NWCT for over 25 years. He has written music and lyrics to Alice In Wonderland: A Jazz Musical, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! and Cinderella: The New Tap Musical. Alice and Cinderella were each named in the “Top 10 Cast Albums of the Year” by TalkinBroadway.com.
Further, Ezra is established in the world of jazz, having released eight albums as a bandleader to international acclaim. Ezra composes and arranges music for numerous performers throughout the U.S. and leads his own big band and sextet. He has performed at major festivals and clubs, including Dizzy’s in NYC, the Triple Door in Seattle, and Catalina’s in Los Angeles. Ezra has won the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award three times and has been listed in DownBeat Critics Polls.

Rachael Singer-Brown (Director/Choreographer) is a director, choreographer, dancer, and teaching artist whose work is rooted in storytelling through movement. She’s always been on the move, starting dance at age three in Pittsburgh, PA, and earning a degree in theater, marketing, and education with a minor in dance from American University in Washington, DC.
As co-founder of PDX Dance Collective, she helped shape a decade of sold-out contemporary performance in Portland and now serves as Artistic Director of the Skylark Tappers.
Recent creative team credits include Alice in Wonderland (NWCT), True West (Mt. Hood Rep), American Girl (Fuse), Bad World (Crave Theatre), and Red (Crave Theatre). She is beyond grateful to Sarah Jane Hardy and Ezra Weiss for the opportunity to direct this world premiere. It’s been a privilege to contribute to a production that not only tells a compelling story, but also celebrates Jewish culture, tradition, and community.

John Ellingson (Assistant Director/Scenic, Properties, and Costume Designer) is Northwest Children’s Theater’s Associate Artistic Director. He’s been designing sets and props for NWCT for more than 10 years.
John’s designs have won multiple awards, including Drammys for he BFG (2013) and James and the Giant Peach (2014). In 2015, he designed the set for NWCT’s Mary Poppins, which won both the Drammy and Portland Area Musical Theater Awards for Outstanding Set Design—the PAMTAs also awarded John’s prop design for the same production.
His proudest design achievements include Matilda the Musical, The Cat in the Hat, James and the Giant Peach, Elephant and Piggie’s: “We Are in a Play!”, and The Little Mermaid.
John studied puppetry in the U.K after being the recipient of the Portland Civic Theater Guild’s Leslie O. Fulton Fellowship which led to creating NWCT’s Starling series, for which he designed and fabricated over 50 original puppets, and took home another Drammy for outstanding puppetry.

Henry Martin (Sound Designer & Board Operator) is delighted to be part of The Golem’s Gift! He’s been part of NWCT since he was 10, and it’s been like a second home ever since.
Most recently, he played White Rabbit in Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and Pete in Pete the Cat. Some of his other favorite roles include Cow Patty Boy in The Stinky Cheese Man (NWCT Alumni Show), Bunny in Goodnight Moon and Huckle Cat in Busytown.

Paul Brown (Lighting Designer) has been with the company for over 25 years.
Previous shows he has designed include Rudolph the red Nosed Reindeer, Frog and Toad, Jungle Book, Elephant and Piggie, as well as many shows for Catalyst, like Newsies and Hamlet. Paul is a graduate of PSU.

Roger Monroe (Stage Manager) has been with NWCT for more than 25 years! His favorite part of working with the company is seeing youth performers come back as adults.
At The Judy, Roger has stage managed for Alice in Wonderland: A Jazz Musical, The Wizard of Oz, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Blue Marigold, and Frog and Toad.
