How is an ogre like an onion? Do donkeys and dragons make good friends? Do YOU know the muffin man? Discover the answers to these questions and more as Shrek, Fiona, and company bumble, blunder, and belch their way from one twisted fairytale to another in this rowdy re-telling of the beloved animated film.

Based on the smash hit animated film series, Shrek the Musical follows the story of one very grumpy ogre (Shrek, played by former OSF Company Member Andrés Alcalá) who lives alone in a swamp. When the insecure and conniving Lord Farquaad (Matthew Brown) expels all of the fairy tale characters from his kingdom, Shrek is forced into an epic adventure that will see him joined by an over-enthusiastic talking Donkey (Sam Burns) and a not-so-by-the-book Princess Fiona (Camille Trinka) with a secret or two up her sleeve. Perfect for children and families, and just in time for the holidays, Shrek the Musical marries the bawdy humor of the original film with spectacular musical numbers added for the Broadway production.

Shrek the Musical is helmed by veteran director, and theater icon, Corey Brunish. As a producer, Brunish has been nominated for six Tony Awards and has won two. This season he has three shows running on Broadway and is the recipient of the Drama desk, Drama League and Outer Critic’s Awards. Corey has directed regionally, coast to coast and has served as an Assistant Director on Broadway.

Shrek is one of the most irreverent, and at the same time moving, musicals around” says Brunish. “The audience feels safe when they laugh, but then we sneak into their hearts and make them feel warm and fuzzy!” Brunish sees Shrek as a buddy comedy at its core, but with a unique romance as the cherry on top. Beyond the belching and coarse humor that made the Shrek franchise a hilarious success, he sees an important message, “We are all unique, we are all different, and we are all worthy of love.”

Shrek the Musical follows on the heels of last year’s holiday production, Mary Poppins, which took home an unprecedented nine Portland Area Musical Theater Awards (PAMTAs) and seven Drammy Awards, including Best Production of a Musical, Best Director, and awards for Costumes and Design.

Shrek the Musical is produced in part through the support of Presenting Sponsor Kafoury & McDougal, as well as the Collins Foundation, Regional Arts and Culture Council and Work for Art, Schwabe, Williamson, & Wyatt, the Oregon Arts Commission, and NWCT Donor Circle Members. More than 5,000 school children will visit Shrek’s fairy tale kingdom during twelve student matinee performances.
