NW Children’s Theater’s 25th Anniversary Season takes flight with the return of award-winning bird-puppet troupe “The Starlings” in Amelia Earhart’s First Flight. This imaginative and immersive exploration of the history of women in flight and aerospace, is part play, part puppet show, and part live-action book report.

The Starlings Present: Amelia Earhart’s First Flight is the second appearance by The Starlings on the NWCT stage, building on the success and acclaim of their first show, The Tail of Sleeping Beauty, which took home Portland Area Musical Theatre Awards for Best Original Musical and Best Original Song along with a special Drammy award for puppet design.

Amelia Earhart’s First Flight takes an aggressively non-narrative approach to its subject matter, and invites the audience to participate directly in the show’s creation. Centered around the character and inspiration of Earhart, The Starlings will lead the audience through game shows, slam poetry, arts, crafts, and even some live tweeting (pun intended). The show was
created in collaboration with its cast; each of The Starlings contributed text, jokes, choreography, and research. Award-winning musical duo
“The Bylines” returned as well with a host of new songs.

Amelia Earhart’s First Flight is the first of four shows in NWCT’s 25th Anniversary Season. All of the scripts in the season are NWCT’s originals or original adaptations, including two new works (First Flight and Chitra: The Girl Prince) and two family favorites (Cinderella and Peter Pan). This season celebrates NWCT’s past, while building a foundation for the future of new play development. Using only home-grown talent, NWCT’s 25th Anniversary is a celebration of the amazing performers, designers, and artists that Portland has to offer.

All four productions in the 25th Season will include NWCT’s new Sensory Friendly Performances. Featuring shorter run-times, no intermission, reduced or removed lighting and sound cues, and the constant presence of house lights, these performances are specially designed for children on the autism spectrum or with other sensory sensitivities. NWCT’s 2017-18 Season
offers four Sensory Friendly Performances free of charge. Sign-interpreted and Audio-described performances will be offered for all productions as well.

The Starlings Present: Amelia Earhart’s First Flight is produced in part through the support of the Collins Foundation, Regional Arts and Culture Council and Work for Art, Kafoury & McDougal, the Oregon Arts Commission, and NWCT Donor Circle Members. More than 3,000 school children will stretch their wings during eight student matinee performances.
