designed to help students hone specific theater skills.

Acting

Introduction to Acting Ages 6-14
This fun format introduces students to basic acting techniques, tips and terms. Class will work on projection, stage direction, theater etiquette, scene work and more. Students will be invited to attend a free performance of Junie B. Jones. Suggested prerequisite to playlab classes.

Intermediate Acting Ages 11-16
Review basic acting techniques then move on to in-depth character analysis, monologues, scene work and more. Intermediate students will be invited to attend a free performance of Junie B. Jones. Previous class or performance work required.

Comedy Splash! Ages 10-14
Jump right in and make a comedy splash! Loosen up with basic improvisation and theater games to help you think on your feet. Then try techniques like spit-takes, double-takes and funny voices to work jokes and comedy scenes. Go ahead — jump!

Advanced Scene Study — Arthur Miller Ages 12-17
George will introduce students to an acclaimed playwright each term, explore their relevance in a cultural setting and work on selected scenes. This fall we celebrate great American playwright, Arthur Miller. Some outside work required. Limit 10.

Private Coaching All Ages
One-on-one intensive coaching for musical and non-musical theater. A coach will help you choose and polish music or monologues, or work on specific acting needs. First Stage

NWCT now offers these exciting theater classes
for our youngest performers.


Jack & Jill and That Hill! Ages 3½-5
Jack and Jill fell down a hill but why were they sent up the hill for water when there was a well at the bottom? Sing songs, play games and rehearse a small nursery rhyme play to perform for families. Class limit 8.

Acting ABCs — the Pumpkin Patch Ages 4½-6
Start at the beginning in the exciting world of theater with songs, stories, costumes, props and puppets as you go on an ABC theater exploration at the pumpkin patch!

The Tiny Witch’s Dilemma! Ages 5-7
It is the season for foggy evenings, falling leaves and Halloween! But the tiny witch has lost her magic wand and her flying broom! Will she find them in time to celebrate with the other witches, ghosts and goblins? Come and find out.

Musical Theater

Classes held in our new Anna G. Bennett Dance Studio!
Some dance shoes are available at a reasonable price.


Voice & Dance Combo Ages 8-14
Students will be introduced to basic techniques of voice and dance — half and half! Classes will do one hour of voice and one hour of dance. The emphasis is on musical theater performance skills.

So You Want to Dance! Ages 11-16
Dancing is cool plus you want to feel more confident at musical auditions? This class is a good place to start. Roz will answer dance questions, teach basic terms and steps you might encounter at auditions plus let you sample Broadway, jazz, Latin, hip-hop, and other popular dance styles.

Film and Video

Basic TV/Film Acting Ages 8-16
Award-winning producer Sandra Peabody develops talent for television, commercials and film, and coaches both locally and nationally. Join her on-camera class for instant feedback as you work on professional audition and presentation skills, essential improvisation, and scenes using film and commercial scripts. Limit 8.

American Classic Cinema: the 50s Ages 11 & Up
During the 1950s conventional and idealized film portrayals were replaced by symbols of rebellion and angst. Work with George to examine scripts, scenes and actors from this exciting decade then act and film selected scenes. Some outside work required. Limit 10.

Playlabs

The following classes will put on a play. Students will audition,
rehearse, and perform. Everyone gets a part!

Size or nature of roles is at the professional discretion of our instructors. All roles provide a valuable learning experience. No refunds granted due to dissatisfaction with assigned roles. Most performances will be videotaped and made available for purchase.

Little Bear & the Mermaid Ages 7-9
This endearing playlab was inspired by the popular “I Can Read” books from the 60s. It is filled with music and imagination and follows Little Bear and his good friends Emily, Hen, Cat and Duck as they set off on a seaside adventure.

Favorite Fantasy Scenes Ages 8-11
Work on your acting skills and theater comprehension as you rehearse scenes from literary greats such as Roald Dahl, J.M. Barrie and Lewis Carroll! Some comedy, some tragedy, these diverse scenes are a fun challenge for young actors!

Pippi’s Party Adventure! Ages 9-12
That one of a kind redhead with the stick-out braids is back in this funny script inspired by the Pippi Longstocking books! The set up — a sedate coffee party for parents, the outcome — a hilarious free-for-all Turkey Tango! This is great fall fun with music, great characters and a focus on comedy!

Dracula’s Brides Ages 10-14
Dracula takes on a new adventure in this tongue-in-cheek comedy perfect for fall. Sink your teeth into both old and new characters and chew up the scenery in this haunted and horrifying playlab!

Rockin’ ‘Round the School! Ages 10-14
School House Rock is the inspiration for this singin’, dancin’, back to school playlab! So brighten up your fall with this colorful, merry, musical romp through hallowed halls!

Classical Theater

The Marvelous Players Ages 11-16
This sly one-act was inspired by a 1610 Miguel Cervantes’ play. Reminiscent of The Emperor’s New Clothes, it exposes racial and ethnic prejudice in seventeenth century Spain as a troupe of tricksters announce that their play can only be seen by pure-blooded Castilians. Funny and dark, this playlab is a timely comment on our human frailties.

Scouts & Brownie Badge Workshop Ages 7 & Up
Boys welcome too—(planned activities may not qualify boys for a theater badge.) Attend a theater class, see a show and complete your theater badge on the same day! Room for a short meal is provided. Scout leader is free. Other parents/chaperones pay half-price.
