NWCT was founded in 1993 by three visionary leaders who saw a need for more arts and educational programming for youth in the Portland area. From humble beginnings lead by dedicated volunteers, NWCT began its first season by offering classes to a handful of students, and producing their first show, Winnie-the-Pooh. According to NWCT Founder and Managing Director Judy Kafoury, “We started with a desk, a phone, and $6000 in the bank. By the end of the year, the company had grossed over $275,000.
NWCT’s College Internship Program provides students in higher education the opportunity to observe and participate in the daily activities of an established, professional non-profit children’s theater. Internship opportunities are available in several departments, including Production, Education, Development and Administration. NWCT strives to tailor internship opportunities to match the needs of the intern’s educational and professional goals with the needs of the company.
NWCT's artistic mission to provide live theater experiences for young audiences that are fresh, engaging and relevant includes conceiving, developing and producing two or more original works for the stage each year.
